Product Description SHOCKING! London's belle of the ball, Susannah Makepeace, is the last person who should suddenly be stuck in the sleepy village of Barnstable. In town, she would never have seen a man swimming naked in a pond. And she certainly would have resisted the urge to draw every single bit of him in astonishing detail! SIZZLING! Very few people know that Viscount Kit Whitelaw is the best spy in His Majesty's secret service. But his high-flying life has finally banished him from London. Not to worry#151;if Susannah's erotic sketches are any indication of her nature, she'll be a delicious stand-in for the thrill of espionage. SCANDALOUS! When odd accidents follow in Susannah's wake, Kit's spy senses start tingling. For what better mystery is there for England's greatest spy than the secrets of the delectable puzzle that is Susannah?

soooo romantic January 10, 2009 IronGarden (Syracuse, NY) Have you read a ton of romances where the two characters like each other on site and you never really get a good explanation for why there is a bond between them? This book is not like that! Yeah!
The love story develops over time and it is so incredibly romantic. The hero treats the heroine really well. She's interesting and grows through the book. Bravo! It's been a long time since I've read a romance novel this well written.
Refreshing Change in Regency Romance October 15, 2007 msbooklady (Biloxi, MS) I found Beauty and the Spy to be a bit of a change from the standard regency romance and in this case it worked to the story's advantage. At the beginning of the story we learn that a politician is on the trail of a traitor who is also a politician and when he gets too close to the truth, he is murdered and his innocent mistress Anne is framed for his murder....a close friend of his James Makepeace steps in and helps Anna escape and promises to find a safe home for her three daughters. Years later, James Makepeace is murdered and his "daughter" Susannah is shocked to find herself penniless...When she is jilted by her aristocratic fiance she moves to the small country house of James' sister and that is where she stumbles onto Kit Whitelaw.
Kit Whitelaw, heir to a title and fortune and a spy for his country, is banished to the country by his father after he calls one of his superiors an idiot. Kit is a rake and proud of it, but he obeys his father and goes to the country to record the local fauna for a publication. While skinny dipping in an isolated pond, Kit is stunned to find a young woman sketching him in all his nude glory. Kit is even further stunned to find out who the young woman is and that someone is trying to kill her. Kit sets out to protect the young lady but finds he is the one who needs protecting, his heart is in danger.
Susannah is fascinated by Kit, he is an enigma and one she intends to figure out. In the meantime, everything she ever knew is turning out to be a lie, he father is not her father, she has a mother and sisters somewhere and for some reason, someone is trying to kill her.
I found this to be interesting and a little different. Kit is perfect, I get so tired of the standard "rake" used in so many regencies. Good story.
Engaging and fun August 26, 2007 a Reader (SoCal) Likeable characters, adventure, suspense, and love. All in a well put together package. Recommended.
1st book in the Holt Sisters Trilogy July 11, 2007 cb (Minot, ND) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I read the books out order which was OK but I would have enjoyed them more not knowing how the mystery ended...before I read this first novel. In this trilogy three sister are seperated after their father is murdered and their mother is acusted of the murder. This novel starts with Susannah loosing her adopted father and having to move to the country. The mystery of who was really at fault for her father starts to reveal it's self. A great start - Check out the entire Holt Sisters Trilogy;
Beauty and the Spy (Book 1), Ways to be Wicked (Book 2),The Secret to Seduction (Book 3).
Simply Wonderful March 7, 2007 Lauren Sophie 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
I read a lot of romance novels and most of them don't linger in my mind two seconds past the time I finish reading them. So for me, the mark of a truly memorable romance novel is that I'm still thinking about it after I've put it aside. Such is the case with Beauty and the Spy.
Julie Anne Long reminds me a lot of my favorite historical romance writer, Julia Quinn, in that she writes witty dialogue, lets the sensuality build slowly, and always ties up every loose end in a very satisfying way. This book had a complicated plot and several point of view characters, but everything moved along at the perfect pace and the end was very satisfying.
Kit and Susannah are very likeable characters, and they come together slowly and believably. You'll feel for Susannah as she struggles to discover her identity and Kit's stubborn refusal to give into his feelings keeps the sexual tension going.
Julie Ann Long is truly talented and this is a fun, engaging read that will make you smile and sigh.
